The True People and Events 

in Captured by Love

Most of my readers know by now that I LOVE to write about true people and events. The books in my Hearts of Faith series are inspired by great women from history including Elizabeth Bunyan in The Preacher's Bride, Narcissa Whitman in The Doctor's Lady, Abigail Adams in Rebellious Heart.

My Michigan Brides Collection, Unending Devotion, A Noble Groom, and now Captured by Love, aren't based on big-name historical women like in my other books. But I do add in real people and facts from Michigan history that make the books especially intriguing.

If you've read any of my other books, you'll quickly realize that I explain what's true and what's not in the Author's Note at the end of my books. Captured by Love is no different. So make sure you don't skip my Author's Notes!

So what really happened and what are the wild wanderings of a writer's imagination?

The entire story itself is rooted in authentic Mackinac Island aura, from the wildlife to the scenery descriptions. I tried to stay as true to the historical setting as possible.

But here are some actual historical events and people that made their way into the book:

It's true that after the British took over the island, American men (not women) had to sign the Oath of Allegiance to the British or leave their homes. Many of the islands residents, rather than lose their land and homes, signed the Oath and stayed on the island. In Captured by Love, I had Angelique's fiancé stay loyal to the Americans and refuse to sign the Oath. Then I tried to show how difficult life would have been for the women and family left behind.

It's true that the once the British took over the island, they really had no clue about how to deal with the harsh Michigan winters. They were ill prepared with both clothing and food supplies. The army rationed food to prevent starvation. They had to eat their horses. And they confiscated food from the island residents.

At the start of 1814 (as Captured by Love opens), the war had been ongoing for almost two years. The new captain that arrived on the island, Captain McDouall, required that all the island residents spend three days working on building a new fort (named Fort George after their king). Can you imagine if you were an American woman or child forced to help fortify your enemy's position?

(Mild spoiler alert!) Obviously the Americans hoped to win the island back from the British. During the summer of 1814, after much delay, the Americans finally attacked. I tried to retell the battle the way that it really happened including an odd diversion in which the British left the battlefield supposing an attack was happening elsewhere on the island. (Of course, I offer my own fictionalized theory for why that diversion happened!)

I also used the names of real war heroes, captains, and colonels as well as the names of places that exist on the island today. The fort still sits on the bluffs of the island with the original stone officer's quarters, soldier's barracks, and storehouse. In fact, you can even peer down into the infamous Black Hole.

One of the blockhouses that was a part of the wall of the fort and used for keeping watch as well as fighting against invaders.

Essentially the book is centered around that real attack by the Americans and the ensuing events.

Could you introduce yourself, sharing a bit about yourself, your family and interests? 

Sure! I'm a homeschooling mama who lives in West Virginia, where I grew up. My husband and I met in college and married when he was in law school. We have three kiddos who are close in age (grades 9, 8, and 7!). I love reading the classics—one of my fave books ever is Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy.

When did you first start writing, and what inspired you to do so?

I've loved writing and reading since I was a child. I wrote poetry through college and tried to start a book or two, but never finished them. When I got married and had children, I shelved that book-writing dream a while. But in 2009, a friend challenged me to NaNoWriMo (write a novel in a month), and I was amazed when I did actually complete my paranormal novel in a month. I got the novel writing "bug" and haven't stopped since!

Could you tell us about your novel, God's Daughter?

God's Daughter is the second novel I wrote. I figured historical would be an easy sell in Christian book circles. Turns out, it really wasn't a time period that was deemed "marketable." After over a year out on submission and numerous attempts to get it in the door, I decided to self-publish it. I knew Vikings were getting increasingly popular and I knew Gudrid (my main character) had a story that needed to be shared.

Why did you decide on the time period of the Vikings for your novel? Have you always had an interest in Vikings?

Yes, my Grandma always reminded us that we were related to Eirik the Red, so I bought a copy of The Icelandic Sagas and read up on Eirik's family. Gudrid Thorbjarnardottir, Eirik's daughter-in-law, really jumped out at me, because she was a beautiful, brave woman who sailed with three husbands across oceans. Also, she was a Christian Viking, which helped me relate to her more.

How did you prepare/research for writing this novel?

I definitely used The Icelandic Sagas as my guidebook for events that would occur, but I did lots of book and online research to get the food/clothing details right. I also researched Old Norse words and tried to base the majority of my word choices on that, while still keeping the conversations clear for modern readers. It got a bit daunting at times, and took a lot of time to decide which words didn't throw the reader out of the era. I did wind up using some words that weren't recorded in Old Norse, just to keep the story flowing.

Was there a particular scene in God's Daughter that you enjoyed writing most, or that set itself apart from the other scenes for you?

I had some scenes that made me tear up each time I edited them. And I really had fun with scenes that involved Gudrid's wild sister-in-law, Freydis. Freydis will be the main character in the second book in this series. The two women couldn't be more different.

What is your hope for this novel, and desire for how it will impact readers?

I hope it brings a relatively obscure, yet important time period to life for readers. I hope it illuminates the fact that Vikings had dreams and hopes like we do, and that there were indeed Christian Vikings. I also hoped to reach married readers with some of the things they may face and can overcome.

What is next for you as an author? Are you currently working on any other writing projects?

I'm working on editing my contemporary Appalachian mystery, Miranda Warning, and will probably self-publish that next. My second Viking novel, Forest Child, is simmering in my brain for now. I will throw myself into that full-force once the mystery is released, probably in late spring.

What is one random thing most people don't know about you?

It's hard to come up with something new, because I'm a very transparent author and my followers know me pretty well. I will share that I'm kind of obsessed with tulips, I have the best in-laws ever, and I bought myself the video game Tomb Raider: Anniversary for Christmas.

Is there anything you'd like to share in closing?

I'm just so thankful God led me into indie publishing, so I was able to finally get my books out to readers that honestly bless me every day. I love having control over my cover art, my marketing, my formatting—everything. I'm also thrilled to share that the audio version of God's Daughter will release later this year! When Heather Day Gilbert recently contacted me with the opportunity to review her new novel, God's Daughter, I eagerly said yes! I love historical fiction set during historic time periods since I love learning about the past. I was especially excited about reading this book set in the 10th century during the time of the Vikings, since novels about Vikings during this time period are often few and far between. I found the prospect of a Viking novel combined with a strong Christian world view to be a book that seemed to have great potential - and it certainly did as it turned out to be a very educating and exciting read that I was glad to not have missed out on!

I was very impressed with this novel. When starting it, I wasn't sure how I'd like it, thought I knew I'd love the historical aspects of learning more about Vikings. After finishing this book I can tell you that I was very impressed and found the book to be filled with historically accurate details that not only helped expand my knowledge of Vikings, but also left me eager for more of this author's novels! Throughout the story it is obvious how important research is to this author. I really admired this aspect of the book since all the details were researched for accuracy, and it really helped me expand my knowledge of Vikings and stirred an interest to continue learning about these self-sufficient people who lived off the land.

One aspect of this book that I also enjoyed was how well the book flowed and how easy it was to continue turning pages! I always enjoy a thrilling read that keeps you reading, and this book was no exception. I never felt like there were any dry spots where things slowed down, and I could tell by the way the story line flowed that it was very well thought out and executed, to give a seamless reading experience. This coupled with all the historical details really made for an enjoyable read!

The characters in God's Daughter were well developed, and I enjoyed getting to know Gudrid and the other Viking wives and mothers. Reading about how different things were for them in their day without electricity or modern conveineces really sparked an admiration and respect for these strong women of our past who played a big part in history. Knowing that these characters were real women who faced these situations helped me connect with the characters, and really opened my eyes to what life was like for these women who were dedicated Vikings. I really admired Gudrid's character and enjoyed seeing her spiritual journey, especially considering how Christianity wasn't the norm for Vikings who were immersed in pagan culture and customs. I loved getting to see the Viking aspect from a Christian perspective, and think this novel is a unique one-of-a-kind!

 

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, or to fans of Lois Walfrid Johnson's Viking Quest Series which is similar to this book in the fact that is about Vikings. While this book is more on the older audience side compared to the young adult Viking Quest Series, I felt like the novel was very clean. The only content I found to be mature were a couple scenes that took place during custom pagan practices. For example the story starts off with a human sacrifice to Thor where a person was hung, and there were one or two scenes where funerals were held, in which the deceased bodies were burned versus buried. There were also two birth scenes, as well as a few scenes where Gudrid battled feeling content with her marriage, and was tempted to feel for other men instead of her husband alone, however she never does give in and is completely pure in her decisions. I can confidently say that all of these scenes were described with caution and discretion, and were not at all gory or overly detailed, which I greatly admired and found to add to the story with the truthful details without going into great detail.

Overall, I really enjoyed this novel! It definitely didn't disappoint me, in fact I was surprised with how much I enjoyed it, and I can't wait to read the next book in the Vikings of the New World series!

Now let me begin by saying that my genre of interest would have to be historical fiction, not dystopian fiction. To be honest, I've not really read a bunch of dystopian novels, and aside from The Hunger Games series, I don't know that I've read any others in this genre. So what perked my interest in reviewing Anomaly, you may ask? Well first let me tell you why I usually don't read a lot of dystopian books: just because they most often aren't clean, much less Christian, and more often than not include language and scenes I'd rather not put in my mind and dwell on. There isn't much Christian values in modern novels in the dystopian genre. Basically, I hadn't been able to find any of these sorts of novels written from a Christian perspective and a Christian author - or ones that at least weren't nasty. But all this changed when I first heard about Anomaly. I had read several reviews on it, and a lot of readers commented on how awesome it was that this book is a Christian one and relates to subjects such as truth, reality, and faith all while being in an exciting dystopian format!

That having been said, I love action novels. Ones that leave you on the edge of your seat and unable to stop reading until you complete the book. So after reading reviews that said this novel has both a Christian perspective and is a page-turner, I was super interested to read this book even though at first sight it didn't look like a book I'd normally pick up and read. But my goodness! Was I in for a surprise! This was my first time to read any of Krista McGee's books, but I'm almost positive it won't be the last. I was just blown away with how wonderful Anomaly was!

The thing that I loved most about this book, aside from the action and adventure, would be how faith and Christianity were strong common threads in this book. Throughout the story, main character Thalli is trying to determine what is real and what isn't since she's been tricked into situations through tests from the Scientists to places that look, and felt legitimately real, only to realize later it was just a computer program that was made to appear real in every sense. She literally doesn't know if certain people are real or figments of the imagination through the computer program that she's been through, and truth and faith are a big deal for her. As she tries to make sense of her life, she realizes that nothing is absolute. Then through a friends help, she comes to know about Christ, who is portrayed as the Designer, and as she puts her trust in Him, she begins a wonderful journey of truth and faith. It had such a powerful message, and on top of that it was super action packed and eventful. It has literally left me on the edge and I simply cannot wait for book two to release next year!

One of my biggest concerns at first with this book was that it would be a bit above my level of tolerance as far as the creepy aspect of a typical dystopian book. Yes, obviously it's science fiction, and that means it's going to be a bit, well science fiction-ish. I mean, from the description, it'd appear to be super creepy, and while there was a mysterious aspect that greatly contributed to the excitement and action in the story, I don't think it ever got to where I felt like it was a too creepy for my taste, but at the same time there was just enough to make it interesting. While this would vary depending on your personal convictions concerning dystopian/science fiction, and how much science fiction you've read in the past, I would highly recommend it to ladies who enjoy fast and exciting fiction with a good dose of Christian influence.

So all-in-all, I loved Anomaly and can't wait for book two, Luminary! {Eeek!} While at first I was a tad bit hesitant about reading this book, I quickly realized that there wasn't a thing to worry about as this book exceeded my highest expectations! It was very well written and the characters were vivid and unique, and the story itself was super original and exciting!

 I would like to start off by thanking author June Caedmon for approaching us about this review and giveaway, Thanks June! I'm really excited to tell you a little bit about this author. This is the first book that I have read by June, and I hadn't heard of her before now, but I was really impressed! There were a few grammatical errors as far as separation of paragraphs and transitional sentences, but the story itself was great!

Melinda Cartwright ran into The Elliot brothers on the road (literally)! To make up for breaking their wagon, she dresses as a boy and helps around their farm to help them catch some criminals in action. She quickly comes to care for all the people at her new home, and God shows her that he knows her Heart's Desire.

 

John Elliot isn't sure how he feels about having a woman work with all the men on his farm. Actually he does, there just isn't much that he can do about it. His concern for Mel's safety soon turns to something more, and it gets harder and harder to let Melinda put herself in dangerous situations.

 

At first they don't get along, but they eventually learn to work together. There is an adventure at the turn of every page, and just like me, you won't be able to put it down!

 

One of the things that I really liked about this book was that it didn't need a bunch of that ooey-gooey romantic stuff to enhance the story. It had enough happening! I also liked the lead female character. Let me tell you, she was a little spit-fire! I can relate to this little woman with a big personality. This a good book to settle down with over the weekend. Hopefully I can get my hands on the second book in this series pretty soon!

The Literary Maidens :: Hi Jody! Welcome to the Literary Maidens blog! Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

 

Jody :: I've been married to my college sweetheart for over twenty years, and we have five children ranging in ages from 15 down to 7. Between homeschooling and running our kids to activities, we're crazily busy! We live in central Michigan and so take our summers very seriously, considering at least 6 months of the year are cold and overcast. 

I've been creating stories for as long as I can remember but began taking my writing seriously after I got married. Once I started having babies, I took a hiatus from writing. The time away from my writing really enriched me. The first book I wrote after my break was The Preacher's Bride.

When I'm not homeschooling or writing, you might find me sneaking in some pleasure reading. And you'd definitely find me eating chocolate and guzzling coffee!

The Literary Maidens :: Could you tell us a little bit about your book "The Doctors Lady"?

Jody ::

Priscilla White bears the painful knowledge that she’ll never be able to be a mother. Having felt God’s call to missionary work, she determines to remain single, put her pain behind her, and answer God’s call.

Dr. Eli Ernest wants to start a medical clinic and mission in unsettled Oregon Country. He’s not interested in taking a wife because of the dangers of life in the west and the fact that no white woman has ever attempted the overland crossing.

But then Priscilla and Eli both receive news from the mission board: No longer will they send unmarried men and women into the field. Left scrambling for options, the two realize the other might be the answer to their needs.

Priscilla and Eli agree to a partnership, a marriage in name only that will allow them to follow God’s leading into the mission field. But as they journey west, this decision will be tested by the hardships of the trip and by the unexpected turnings of their hearts.

The Literary Maidens :: Where did you get your inspiration for this book?

 

Jody :: This book is inspired by the true life story of Narcissa Whitman, the first white woman to brave the dangers of overland trail and travel west. In 1836, she married Dr. Whitman, and then the next day left her childhood home and would never return for the purpose of starting a mission among the Nez Perce natives.

It was my hope in this story to bring Narcissa Whitman to life. This heroic woman has often been ignored and at times even disparaged. In reality, she exuded incredible courage to attempt a trip many proclaimed foolishly dangerous. It was called an “unheard-of-journey for females.” Because of her willingness to brave the unknown, she led the way for the many women who would follow in her footsteps in what would later become known as the Oregon Trail.

The Literary Maidens :: Where are you in the process of your upcoming new release "Rebellious Heart"?

 

Jody :: A couple of weeks ago I completed my last set of edits known as the Galleys. I sent that back to my publisher and now they'll be making their last changes to the book as well. And very soon, they'll begin sending the book out to reviewers. My work is done on the book . . . until it releases, and then I'll be busy again doing interviews and helping to promote it.

The Literary Maidens :: Out of all your books, do you have a personal favorite?

 

Jody :: That's a hard one because I fall madly in love with all of my books as I'm writing them! I think they're all SO wonderful–until I beginning editing and then I loathe them. While I can't pick one book, I can say that one of my favorite heroes so far is Carl from A Noble Groom because he's so sweet and caring and funny.

The Literary Maidens :: What is something the average person doesn't know about you?

 

Jody :: I have most of the songs of Sound of Music memorized (due to watching it every year as a child). Now, whenever I watch the movie, I belt out the songs at the top of my lungs, much to the listening pleasure of my children. *Grin*

The Literary Maidens :: Do you have any writing quirks?

 

Jody :: I don't have too many quirks, other than needing a cup of coffee on hand while I'm writing

(especially in the morning!).

One of the things I like to do to help me keep on track with my writing is give myself half hour word count challenges–a specific goal of how many words I can get written in a thirty minute time span. Doing these mini-challenges keeps me from getting too distracted by other things while I'm in a writing mode.

The Literary Maidens :: Where do you usually write?

 

Jody :: Most days I sit in the kitchen or dining room where I’m able to keep my eyes and ears on all that’s going on around me. That way I can see when the dog is about to eat another sock, put a halt to my youngest riding down the steps in laundry baskets, and make sure my children are practicing piano diligently (rather than getting up to get a snack every few minutes). Of course, this is all hypothetical. None of this ever happens. And my writing time is always quiet and peaceful as my children go about their work without needing any of my intervention. *Wink*

I actually do my best writing in my office, which is upstairs away from the noise and chaos. But I don’t get to retreat there very often, just a few times a week for extended writing time.

Most of the time, I plug in headphones, put on Pandora, and write no matter what’s going on around me. I’ve had to learn to just do it and not wait for the perfect moment.

The Literary Maidens :: When did you decide to be an author, and what inspired you to write?

 

Jody :: I’m pretty sure I was born with a pen in one hand and a notebook in the other. Since my earliest days, I loved making up stories and writing them down. The passion followed me into adulthood. And after many twists and turns along the path, I’ve finally been able to channel that passion into a full time writing career.

My mom was the most influential person in my writing career. When I was young, she helped facilitate my love of writing by reading aloud to me, giving me good books to read, and providing the kind of environment that fostered my creativity (in fact we didn’t have a TV for a number of years). She always believed in me, encouraged me to pursue my dreams, and rode alongside me cheering me on.

Judith is supervising some of the children in the community when her little brother Samuel climbs up onto the roof of their barn during a barn raising. When Judith sees her brother in such a dangerous situation she shouts for her charge to come down, causing him to startle and fall off the top of the barn. When she is the first by his side (or so she thought) she saw a man with bright blue eyes kneeling over him, when she looks up at him all he says is something along the lines of "Have faith, for Samuel's steps are ordained by God." She later finds that her brother is paralyzed from the hips down. Who was this man that spoke in the place of God? She believes he is an angel. When Judith shares her experience with some of her friends and relatives, things turn sour. Why won't any one trust her? Andrew Lapp is the only person who believes her, and since he is the bishops son she doesn't want to share much with him either.

 This book was amazing! This is actually the second time that I have read it, and I think it was even better the second time. I love the thought of an angel appearing in modern times. This is yet another book that caused a book hangover for me. It's so realistic that I feel like the characters are my friends. Well, most of them. ;)

I loved how this story came to life so soon in the book. Unlike a lot of books where you have to get five chapters or so into the book before it gets interesting, "The Promise Of An Angel" brings you in on like, the third page. It was a great read that shows just how faith and the power of our Almighty God can overcome all things. READ IT.

Wow. This book was even better than the first one, if that's even a possibility. I loved the first book in this series because of the human interaction with the angel, and this one also had that. Plus, Brush Of Angel's Wings had some scenes with the enemy too. I loved how Ruth showed the power of prayer, and how when a child of God prays demons sink into the floorboards so to speak. This book is not only a wonderful novel for its plot, but for it's message also. I felt really encouraged when I finished it, and I felt like God used it to prod me to spend more time in prayer. I would most definitely recommend this book for anyone and everyone who can see straight enough to read it. And if you like Amish fiction, this is your new favorite book.

I also loved the main character. Rachel isn't your average bear if ya know what I mean. She has a competitive streak a mile long, she can't cook, she's not the best homemaker and boys don't seem to know that she even exist. I can relate ;) . I loved how when the angel was comforting either Rachel or Jordan he touched them with his wings. Way to work in the title, Ruth! All the characters are so relatable, and I hope that there is a fourth installment in this series very soon!

Katie Bender is a young Amish school teacher who is content with her lot in life. After her fiance James died a couple of years ago, she had given up on marriage and a family. She was happy to teach the children of Hope Falls and live in her own little house by herself. Until a tornado struck the town and demolished the schoolhouse and everything in it.

Seth Stutzman is just passing through, helping his uncle with a bee hive project. He plans to leave as soon as the job is done, so that he can get back to his own business. But then his uncle is struck with temporary blindness and he is needed more than ever.

Circumstances draw these two together despite their reservations, and strange things start happening when they pray and put their faith in the one who has it all under control.

One of the things that I like about this book (and this whole series really) is that it doesn't need a bunch of romance to enhance the story. Though there is a little, it's not the main focus of the book. The main focus was on the actual people and the spiritual battle warring on within them. Katie was just a plain school teacher, yet God sent his angels down to protect and encourage her. It just goes to show that no matter how big or how small you might think you are, God created you and he loves you.

I love all of the books that I have read by Ruth Reid, and I can't wait to see more from her. There is absolutely NOTHING that I would change about these books. They're absolutely fantastic.

// Bethany's Book Review //

I have read both To Die For, and The Secret Keeper, the first two books in the Ladies In Waiting series. So when I heard that there was a third book on Queen Elizabeth I, I was very eager to read it and looked forward to it's publication for several months. While this book wasn't my favorite book in the series, I certainly enjoyed it and loved how it was very rich in history and historical facts, along with a good amount of fictitious additions to liven up the story.

The biggest pro for me, with this book is the amount of history! I love learning about great women of the past, especially those of high importance that placed a huge role in history; so I really enjoyed learning more about Queen Elizabeth I and her ladies maids. I like how this story was written from Helena's view (Queen Elizabeth's highest ranking ladies maid) and it not only gave a behind the scenes view at Queen Elizabeth's life, but also provided a interesting view in court that is from a lesser known position: the ladies maids and women who tended to Queen Elizabeth I. I think that reading this series has definitely helped me become more aware of the great Kings and Queens of our past, and sparked an interest in learning as much as I could about them! Anyone who enjoys history would be sure to enjoy and benefit from reading these books, as the amount of research Sandra did for this novel is obvious in the rich historical facts in the story.

There were two big cons for me though. The first was probably the difficulty I had with keeping all the characters in line and remembering how they are related. =) I've always had a difficult time with the whole family relations deal, and sometimes it can be confusing! However the four family trees that Sandra provided in the book were very helpful. But even then sometimes I would get a little lost and that was the biggest con for me as sometimes I'd just give up trying to remember how a lesser seen character is related and what they are to the Queen, etc. But overall I did still learn a lot through the history and was able to at least remember all the main characters.

The other con for me was the marital intimacy details and descriptions. I felt like it got a little too detailed during some scenes with Helena and her husband on several occasions, and it overstepped my comfort line. So for this reason would recommend the book for ages 15+. Other than this though I enjoyed the book, even it though it took me a while to read. At first I was planning on giving it 3 or 3.5 stars, but in the end I decided on 4 since I loved all the history.

For those that are new to Sandra's Tudor fiction series, who have an interest in reading Roses Have Thorns, there is good news. This series is not one that has to be read in order, and aside from a few tiny details, there is no overlapping of the books, and they would easily be read out of order without needing to worry if you hadn't read the previous books in the series. Wow. Just wow. I LOVED this book! There were so many aspects of this book - so many little things that really added up - I just can't believe how wonderful this book was! Melanie has done it again and left a lasting mark on the classic Snow White fairytale, writing a novel even better than the original!

 

First off, I think it's super cool how Melanie re-writes well known fairytales and makes them even more amazing than the originals! I loved how The Fairest Beauty was heavily based on Snow White, yet it had some unique aspects that were very original and made this classical story even better. I liked how she kept the "evil" stepmother, knight in shining armor, and the seven dwarfs in the story but added the unique parts like the cross necklace and it's life saving scene, and how Lady Rose from The Healers Apprentice was incorporated at the end of the book.

 

Second of all, I just loved Sophie. Like a lot. I loved her sweet character and her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ even when she didn't know what He was doing or why she was going through hardships. My second favorite character was Gabe. What a hero. He was so respectful of Sophie and a true gentleman. Another note I'd like to add while I'm talking about the characters, is I liked how Melanie handled the evil witch in the original Snow White. I liked how she was actually a stepmother in the book, and how even though it was quite obvious that she was less than kind and very cruel, I liked how she wasn't made out to be a scary or spirit-filled witch. It was very obvious that she was the "bad girl" but we were spared nasty details and all that.

 

Another thing I adored about this book was how Christ was a part of the story. I loved all the Bible verses that characters brought up or quoted as well as the prayer and emphasis on making sure the marriage was according to God's will. I also loved how there was an emphasis on the family's blessing on the marriage, as that is something I see lacking in our culture today.

 

This book was so excited and a real adventure! I actually started it at 10 p.m. thinking I'd just start it and wasn't really planning on staying up late or reading a lot. Ha! Long story made short, I was up until midnight where I finally stopped after completing half of the book, and then it was only because my eyes were giving up on me! I just could not put it down! I kept telling myself "I'll just finish this last chapter" but it ended up being more like " I'll just hit the half-way mark." :) A total page-turner -  the pages just flew by and I found it very easy to read and a great enjoyment. I would highly recommend this book to all fairytale lovers, as it's full of action, and has the essential Snow White details with a few nice extra touches, and has a nice Christian view and is in my opinion, a wonderful teen-fiction. Bravo, Melanie! I simply cannot wait for your next book The Captive Maiden to come out later this year!!

I just finished this book a few minutes ago, so I'm still recovering. This book was FABULOUS. Melanie Dickerson is most definitely one of my top 5 favorite authors of all time. I loved how when Gabe was nursing Sophie's wound in the woods he mentioned the same healer from The Healers Apprentice. I love how there is always some small link between her princess spin-offs that connect them to each other. In fact, I believe her next book, which is a Cinderella spin-off, is about Gabe's brother, Valten. I really can't wait for The Captive Maiden to release. I've read all of Melanie's books so far, and they are all 6 out of 5 stars (but seriously). So far, all of Melanie's books are medieval times renditions of well known classical fairytales. The Merchants Daughter is a Beauty and the Beast spin-off, The Healers Apprentice covered Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), and The Fairest Beauty was Snow White. I don't know why someone didn't think of doing this sooner, but in my humble opinion, Melanie is a stinking genius. What better way to grip a teenage girls heart than with princes and princesses?! There is none.

 

Sophie doesn't know it, but she is a Duke's daughter. Born for wealth and prestige, she was raised as a kitchen maid. As if that wasn't bad enough, she is always being found guilty for some small transgression or another by Duchess Ermengard, the lady of the castle and Sophie's stepmother (though she doesn't know that at first). All her fellow servants adore her, and the only time she gets in trouble is when she is helping someone else. Sophie is the kind of woman that we should all strive to be: loving, kind, caring and forgiving of her enemies. But she is treated so cruelly that all she wants to do is to escape the walls that confine her. And through Gabeheart, she gets that chance.

 

Gabe, the second eldest son of his family, is known for being a bit irresponsible and flighty. He can only imagine the fame and respect he will get from rescuing his brothers betrothed while Valten lies in bed with a broken leg. He never expected to fall for Sophie . . .

 

I loved watching Gabe grow from a boy to a man, and Sophia from a mistreated maid to a lady of wealth and family. This story will tear your heart apart, so beware. It's so neat to watch Gabe go from young and irresponsible to trying his hardest to be the kind of man Sophie deserves. I love the respect and integrity that comes so naturally with the times of Sophie and Gabe, and I love being reminded how lucky I am to have the family that I have, and the things that I am blessed with. I love everything about this book. I couldn't find a single fault in it, and I'm not gonna try. If you have read any of my other book reviews here on TLM, you know that I'm a pretty tough critic when it comes to the the books that I read and the stuff that I put into my head, so this is saying a lot for Melanie's work. I HIGHLY recommend not only this book, but anything written by Melanie. She is a wonderful author, and she has quite a way with words. I hope that y'all will take our advice and go to your local library or bookstore and get one of Melanie's books. You won't regret it.
