The Tutor's Daughter// B o o k   D e s c r i p t i o n //

"Emma Smallwood, determined to help her widowed father regain his spirits when his academy fails, agrees to travel with him to the distant Cornwall coast, to the cliff-top manor of a baronet and his four sons. But after they arrive and begin teaching the younger boys, mysterious things begin to happen and danger mounts. Who does Emma hear playing the pianoforte, only to find the music room empty? Who sneaks into her room at night? Who rips a page from her journal, only to return it with a chilling illustration?

The baronet's older sons, Phillip and Henry, wrestle with problems--and secrets--of their own. They both remember Emma Smallwood from their days at her father's academy. She had been an awkward, studious girl. But now one of them finds himself unexpectedly drawn to her.

When the suspicious acts escalate, can the clever tutor's daughter figure out which brother to blame... and which brother to trust with her heart?"

Out of all six of Julie Klassen's books, I've read four, and by far, The Tutor's Daughter was for SURE my very favorite and the most clean of the ones I've read. I was very impressed with it and thoroughly enjoyed every page! Some of Julie's other books were for older girls as they had some mature content that I really didn't care for, but this book pleasantly surprised me in the fact that it was very clean. I especially appreciated how the romance level was very low, and how the author chose to save the romance for the end, so that you can enjoy the story without it being overly romantic the whole time. I've recently come to have a great appreciation for books that have a balanced amount of romance, as so often this is the main focus of a book and kind of drowns out the actual story, not to mention put wrong thoughts in your mind from time-to-time, but this one had the perfect amount and was well-balanced.

Another thing I enjoyed was the suspense! It was such a page-turning book, and very exciting! I really liked how Julie accomplished getting a very healthy dose of suspense in the story without involving any deaths, murder, crimes, etc, that are so often found in suspense novels. Their were also many twists and turns that I never saw coming, and kept the story from getting dull. Right when I thought all the questions were answered, there would be something else that would come up that I never saw coming!

As for the characters, I loved them all from the start, well... maybe not all of them....Henry for one, wasn't exactly my favorite male character to begin with.... *Shows knowing grin to those who had read The Tutor's Daughter and remember Henry's famous speech concerning a dance he would perform at Emma's wedding.....* The main character, Emma, however I did love from the beginning. She is a very likable character and I loved how she kept a journal and was very orderly, oh and she LOVES books - that we have in common. ;) After reading that part, I was like, okay, I really like this character now. New best friend. She's my favorite. :)

But anyways, this book had a very wonderful moral of not judging "a book by it's cover" so to speak, as we see clearly how someone can change drastically for the better; as well as the other side of someone's character getting worse with age. I'd say which of the two brother's was my favorite, but that would basically give the book away so I won't tell you, but if you've read the book, I assure you that you will know, as we will most probably agree.

Another thing I was very enthused about was all the history packed into this book! In the author's note in the back after the story, I was surprised to learn that some of the characters, as well as the places, were all true and actual people and places-most of them so accurate down even to the names! I love books with a well-written story, but to get history in there as well...I'm all for it, and wasn't disappointed with this one!

Another favorite thing in this book was the level on Christian values involved. At the beginning of the story, Emma wasn't on speaking terms with God after her mother's death. However in the story a certain male character gets to share Christ with her and she renews her faith and lives her life more profitably in the end. I loved the scene were this took place, it's one of my favorite parts in the whole book!

The only thing I didn't really like in this story was their were a few little scenes that got, well, to be a bit more than I'd have written. But it really depends on what you are used to. Their is one scene where Henry makes a certain comment sarcastically early on in the book, as well as a few other little things such as two of the main characters unexpectedly being in each others presence at night in their nightclothes due to an "emergency" involving blood. As well as a disturbing image that was painted on one of Emma's missing journal pages that was stolen. They weren't at all a deal breaker or anything so bad that you'd not to read the book because of them, but I didn't really care for them. Romance-wise this book was very clean, and the farthest it ever went was some kissing. Total I think there were three kisses towards the end. While they were a bit descriptive, they weren't at all inappropriate, but again, it all depends on what you are used to. Girls who would most enjoy this book the most would be those who love Christian historical fiction, with a bit of romance mixed in, with a regency era style.

This book was amazing! I have only read one other book by Julie Klassen (The Apothecary's Daughter), but this book made her one of my favorites. It was so . . . original! Not the same old historical fiction I'm used to. It was suspenseful, and I definitely kept me on my toes.

Pros:
  • It had SO much suspense
  • It kept you on your toes. Just when you think you have figured out "Who Dunnit", Klassen throws in something else that makes you re-think everything. Totally unpredictable. Who likes a predictable book anyway? That takes all the fun out of it!
  • Their was JUST enough romance. Enough to compliment the story, but not so much that it's overbearing. I think it was really cute how she kept getting "secret admirer" letters. Classic!
  • I loved how Emma and the family of her employer have a past that goes all the way back to Emma's childhood. It's so sweet how that all comes together.
  • Phillip and Henry. These characters are the ones that made me fall in love with this book. They were total gentlemen. Well, at least they were as adults.
  • It was clean. No inappropriate dialog or anything like that.

Cons:
I really can't think of anything off the top of my head. It was a really good book.

Bottom line: Read it. It's sweet, suspenseful, it's historic, and you never know what will happen on the next page.

Description (Taken From Good Reads):

"Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love."

Madi's Review ::
Let me just start off by saying, if you have a thing against violence, stop reading right now, and go watch an episode of "My Little Pony" or something. Now, that being said, this was one of THE best books I've ever read. Hands down. I'm now a total hunger games fanatic. The extreme kind, like you see on Pinterest. This book is hard to explain without sounding like I support murder (which I don't), so I'm just gonna start from the beginning and go from there.

I have been hearing about "The Hunger Games" for months now from all my nerdy and non-nerdy friends. I didn't get the big hullabaloo. But of course, I hadn't read the books (or even seen the movie for that matter. definitely making a trip to Hastings soon). I asked for all three of the books for Christmas, even though I had no stinkin' clue what they were about. I seriously didn't even know the plot until I started reading the back cover a few days after Christmas. And even then I was like "Whaaa? Why would everyone be so pumped about a bunch of people dying?". Okay, that sounds morbid, but it's the truth. So, to make sure that you guys have somewhat of an idea about what the big deal is, I'll explain a little bit about "The Hunger Games".

There are twelve districts where Katniss Everdeen lives, and she lives in district number twelve. There used to be Thirteen, but one was demolished seventy some odd years ago. Every year there are two tributes chosen from each district (A boy and a girl) to compete in the annual hunger games. The Hunger Games, is where the capital puts all the tributes together in an arena and make them fight to the death. The last one standing gets fame and fortune, all the others, well . . . they die. This "Game" can last weeks, sometimes even months.

Can you imagine going from hunting a caring for your family to just trying to not get killed? I mean, 23 people out to kill you, that's some serious stuff. It tells you how Katniss and her fellow district twelve tribute, Peeta, survive attacks. Not just from their fellow tributes, but from the wild, and not to mention the occasional fire storm from the capital.

I'm not sure how to do this book justice, except to tell you that if you find the time to read it, you won't regret it. I couldn't put it down. Once I started it, I was a goner, forever destined to be a Katniss wanna-be.

Just read it.

Okay so the Hunger Games = outstanding series! I read all three books in one weekend. Suzanne Collins did a fantastic job. The personal journey of our beloved Katniss Everdeen is thrilling, passionate, dangerous and touching. The fact that this whole thing began for Katniss because of her love for her sister makes the story all the more enjoyable. Through her journey she makes many friends and many enemies. You look at the world through her eyes, from poor district twelve all the way to the crazy capital, from her best friend Gale to the bakers son Peeta, Katniss' journey will make you laugh and cry as you go through this incredible journey with its ups and downs, danger and romance and, choices of  life and death. Welcome to the world that is the Hunger Games.  And may the odds be ever in your favor.

Description (Taken From Good Reads):

"Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol - a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create.

Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.

In Catching Fire, the second novel of the Hunger Games trilogy, Suzanne Collins continues the story of Katniss Everdeen, testing her more than ever before...and surprising readers at every turn."

Madi's Review ::
I literally just finished this book less than ten minutes ago. I'm still in shock. Talk about some curve balls! Just when things start to settle down . . . BAM! No rest for the weary. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, because it is the most amazing book, so I'll try not to be too detailed in what happens. I'll just tell you this, you never saw this book coming. I actually read it in less than 24 hours, that's how good it was. Is. I couldn't put it down! Hats off to Suzanne Collins on this amazing piece of literature. There were a couple of times when one or more of the characters used a phrase that I think was better left out, but nothing extreme. I can't wait to start the next and last book of "The Hunger Games". What will I do with my life when I'm done with it? Good thing I own them so I can read them as often as I like.

 In "Catching Fire" many more characters are introduced, some lovable, some despicable, all extraordinary. My favorite of the newbies is Finnick. He's handsome, he's strong, and he's keeping Katniss and Peeta alive, risking his own life multiple times to do so. There's so much I want to tell you, but I don't want to ruin it for you! I mean, for real, I could go all nerdy on you and give you every. single. detail. But I won't. You can Thank me later. Half the fun of reading "Catching Fire" was not knowing what was gonna happen next, because there was always a surprise of some sort on every page. I sincerely hope that you will take some time out of your busy lives to read it, you will be so glad that you did.

ISBN: 978-0-439-02351-1

Publication Date: 2009

 Description (Taken From Paper Back Swap):
MY NAME IS KATNISS EVERDEEN. — WHY AM I NOT DEAD? — I SHOULD BE DEAD. — Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss's family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding. — It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans -- except Katniss.

The success of the rebellion hinges on Katniss's willingness to be a pawn, to accept responsibility for countless lives, and to change the course of the future of Panem. To do this, she must put aside her feelings of anger and distrust. She must become the rebels' Mockingjay -- no matter what the personal cost.

 Madi's Review ::
I'm not sure what to say about this book. From regular standards, it was spectacular. But after reading the first two books in this series (which were AMAZING), I must admit that I am a little disappointed. I was ready for another awesome hunger games book, and that's not exactly what I got. I'm actually not sure how to accurately describe this book without making it sound like a flop (which it's not). I'll just say that it's not my favorite in the trilogy and leave it at that.

The plot was pretty interesting. Katniss becomes the "Mockingjay" (hints the title), which means she is the face of the rebellion breaking out over the capital. She does TV interviews, she gets caught in the middle of bombings, she saves her friends and family, only to lose most of them. That's right. In the last chapter is where everything happens. Everyone dies (or at least a large number of important characters), and they win. The end. There was one character in particular who's death really tore my heart out, but I won't mention any names. Oh, and Katniss finally decides between Gale and Peeta. On. the. very. last. page. Good thing there's an epilogue, or I would have been left wondering how that turned out. Would I recommend that you read it? ABSOLUTELY. Is it my favorite books in "The Hunger Games"? No. But that's okay, because not every book can be my favorite. But it really was worth the time it took to read it, and in general I enjoyed it. It just wasn't like the first two books. In any way.

Madi And Bethany:)

Just thought that we would share with you a picture of our Literary Maidens.

This is Madi (Left) and Bethany (Right).

You know, it's kind of funny, because since we grew up together ( known each other since we were

 still in diapers), and because we know just about everything about each other, we have always been

fellow nerds. We can talk about books for HOURS. I'm sure we drive our families insane with our

constant book chatter. You thought all that is just on the blog? Ha! Every time we see each other at

least one of our conversations starts with "Have you read.....?". It's pretty comical actually.

Well, we hope you had a SUPER Christmas and an AWESOME New Year!
